An 1872 oil on canvas portrait, Berthe Morisot with a Bouquet of Violets, by Edouard Manet (1832-83), the French modernist painter. Morisot, a noted impressionist painter in her own right, was a favourite subject of Manet's. This example shows the artist's love of black which he uses to frame the sitter's face.
