An 1879 oil on canvas painting, Chez le père Lathuille (At Père Lathuille's), by Edouard Manet (1832-83), the French modernist painter. With the setting as one of the artist's favourite café-restaurants, the relationship between the central figures is ambiguous. The woman sits at a table set for one while the man, not actually seated but crouching, seems to be propositioning her, although she is also smiling. The waiter in the background seems unsure what to do with his pot of coffee. The work was exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1880. (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Tournai, Belgium)
