An 1889 oil on canvas painting, Hospital in Arles, by Vincent van Gogh (1853-90), the Dutch post-impressionist artist. Painted in April in Arles' hospital where the artist was taken after his first mental crisis in December 1888 when he cut off part of his ear. The view is the one from his room in the hospital. The courtyard is still there today and looks very much as it does in this painting. (Oskar Reinhart Collection, Winterhur, Switzerland)
