An 1889 oil on canvas painting, Wheatfield with Cypresses, by Vincent van Gogh (1853-90), the Dutch post-impressionist artist. Painted in September near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. The artist painted a series of fields and cypress trees while he was convalescing from his illness in Saint-Rémy. Vincent regarded this painting as one of his best summer landscapes. The swirling clouds and thick application of paint are typical of his work in this period, but he has muted his palette and reduced the saturated colours seen in his earlier work in Arles.
