An 1869 oil on canvas painting, Edma Pontillon at a Window, by Berthe Morisot (1841-95), the French impressionist painter. The sitter is Edma Pontillon, sister of the artist. Like other impressionists, Morisot tried frequently the difficult task of capturing the play of light on white objects - here the dress in the light from the open window. Edma was expecting a baby at this time and, confined indoors, she is captured bored and toying with her fan. (National Gallery of Art, Washington DC)
