An 1874 oil on canvas painting, Boats Under Construction, by Berthe Morisot (1841-95), the French impressionist painter. Morisot painted a good number of such scenes as this at ports like Lorient, Cherbourg, Fécamp, and at Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The artist was keen to break away from stereotypical "feminine" scenes but found this difficult to do in practice. Significantly, this work was selected by her and shown at the Second Impressionist Exhibition in Paris in 1876. (Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris)
