An 1865 oil on canvas painting, Medieval War Scene, by Edgar Degas (1834-1917), the French impressionist painter. The subject is not known precisely, despite the later association of Orléans with the work. Typical of Degas' early career and interest in historical scenes presented in a frieze-like manner, this work was accepted by the Salon in Paris. The artist added an extra strip of canvas on the right side to elongate the scene even further. (Musée d'Orsay, Paris)
