An 1867-8 oils on canvas, Portrait of James Tissot, by Edgar Degas (1834-1917), the French impressionist painter. Tissot (1836-1902) was a fellow artist and friend of Degas. Here the subject is shown in his studio and, in a typical Degas device, there is a painting behind him that gives homage to Renaissance art, a noted portrait of Frederick the Wise (1463-1525).
