Woodcut image of the execution of William Tyndale (c. 1494-1536) from Foxe's Book of Martyrs (1563). Tyndale was first strangled, in recognition of his standing as a scholar, and then his corpse was burned at the stake. His last words were a prayer, "Lord, Open the King of England's Eyes!" in reference to the prohibition on translating the Bible into English.
