An 1877 oil on canvas, Gare Saint-Lazare, by Claude Monet (1840-1926), the French impressionist painter. Fascinated by the play of light on steam and industrial architecture, Monet painted a whole series of canvases on trains and stations. Given permission to paint in Paris' Saint-Lazare station, he even had the train delayed for this painting until he was satisfied with the light conditions. (Musée d'Orsay, Paris)
