An 1893 oil on canvas, The Portal and The Tour d'Albane in the Sunlight, by Claude Monet (1840-1926), the French impressionist painter. Monet painted over 30 different views of Rouen Cathedral in various atmospheric conditions. The details of Gothic architecture were incidental in the artist's search for fleeting effects of light and colour. Monet worked on several canvases simultaneously, but many took two trips to Rouen and further work in his studio in Giverny to complete. All of this series was either painted as viewed from the Hotel d'Angleterre or the front of a nearby draper's shop. (Musée d'Orsay, Paris)
