An 1884 oil on canvas, Villas in Bordighera, by Claude Monet (1840-1926), the French impressionist painter. The artist visited the south of France and Liguria in Italy in 1883-4 and was fascinated by the Mediterranean light and colours. At Bordighera alone, he produced 50 paintings and used a noticeably brighter palette than previously in his career. (Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California)
