An 1898 oil on canvas, Place du Théâtre Français, by Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), the Danish-French impressionist painter. The artist painted many scenes of Paris in this later stage of his career. Many, as here, lack a horizon or well-defined border to the action. This and the elevated viewpoint suggest to the viewer – which, of course, is the case in reality – that they are only seeing a small snapshot of a busy city as people enter and exit the scene. This view could be seen from the hotel where Pissarro stayed, the Hôtel du Louvre. (Los Angeles County Museum of Art)
