An 1877 oil on canvas, The Côte des Boeufs at L'Hermitage, by Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), the Danish-French impressionist painter. This deceptively simple view reveals on closer inspection the artist's complex use of brushstrokes. The vertical trees are rendered using multiple layers and cross-strokes. Over these, there are countless small brush marks of blue, white, cream, and yellow. The undergrowth and lower branches of the trees are so dense it is difficult to discern the two human figures.
