An 1880 oil on canvas, Landscape at Chaponval, by Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), the Danish-French impressionist painter. A work that illustrates the love of blue, a colour Pissarro sometimes came in for criticism for overusing. The artist wrote on the reverse of this canvas "Please do not varnish this picture". Pissarro was generally against the use of varnish since it darkens with age and so alters the appearance of the colours. (Musée d'Orsay, Paris)
