An 1887 oil on canvas, Martinique Landscape (aka Tropical Vegetation), by Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) the French post-impressionist painter. Although disappointed at the Europeanization of the Caribbean island, the artist was impressed with the colours and density of the tropical vegetation. (Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh)
