An 1884 oil on canvas, Man at his Bath, by Gustave Caillebotte (1848-96) the French impressionist painter. For the period, this was an unusual depiction of the male nude. Seen from behind as if being spied upon unawares, the man is obviously not a model as he has just left wet footprints on the floor after exiting his bath. The painting is given life by contrasting the curves of the man, bath, and chair with the rigid straight lines of the wall and curtains behind. (Boston Museum of Fine Arts, USA)
