Illustration
An 1878 oil on canvas, View of the Rooftops (Snow Effect) or Rooftops under Snow, by Gustave Caillebotte (1848-96) the French impressionist painter. The artist's favourite tones of blues and greys are well-suited here to the cold winter scene. Nowadays, we are very familiar with the almost clichéd rooftops of Paris but when this painting was made it was an innovative choice of subject. (Musée d'Orsay, Paris)
