Illustration
An 1880 oil on canvas, A Woman in Black at the Opera, by Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), the American impressionist painter. Female impressionists like Cassatt had a different choice of subject than their male counterparts, often focussing on feminine activities and personalities. Here the interest of the lady viewer is keenly expressed, but also note the highly impressionistic rendering of the figures behind her. (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, USA)
