A c. 1682 portrait by Peter Lely of James Scott, Duke of Monmouth (b. 1649). Monmouth was the illegitimate son of Charles I of England and led the failed Monmouth Rebellion against James II of England. He was executed for treason in 1685. (National Trust Collection)
