Housesteads Roman Fort (Vercovicium) had at least ten barrack blocks that provided adequate accommodation for the milliary cohorts. Two such buildings are still visible in the northeast quarter of the fort. The barracks were long and narrow, aligned east to west and typically subdivided into ten rooms (contubernia). A larger room stood at the end of the barrack block, intended for the centurion who lived with his family and slaves.
