The remains of the central headquarters building (principia) of Chesters Roman Fort dating from the reign of Hadrian (r. 117-138 CE). The headquarter building occupied the central place in the fort. It was built around a paved courtyard surrounded by colonnades. The principia formed the administrative heart of the fort, where the standards of the regiment were laid up.
