Svaneti is a historic province in the northwestern part of Georgia on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. The region has a high content of gold in its rocks and river alluvium, which may have been the source of gold for the artefacts found in the adjacent Colchis lowland plains, especially at Vani. The natives in Svaneti, the Svans, have been mining gold from rivers for millennia with the sheepskin technique. This technique for collecting gold may have given rise to the legend of Jason and the Argonauts and the quest for the Golden Fleece.
