Xenophon was a Greek military leader, philosopher, and historian. He was one of Socrates' students and participated in the Persian wars. In his famous book Anabasis, he recounted the expedition and retreat of the Ten Thousand, an army of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger to help him seize the throne of Persia from his brother, Artaxerxes II, in 401 BCE.
