Lieutenant General John Burgoyne (1722-1792), a British military officer and playwright. Burgoyne is best known for leading the British army during the Saratoga Campaign (June-October 1777) during which he was defeated and forced to surrender. Oil on canvas portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, c. 1766.
