Although mortally wounded, Patriot General Nicholas Herkimer continues to command his troops at the Battle of Oriskany (6 August 1777), during the Saratoga Campaign of the American Revolutionary War. While Herkimer's Patriot troops ultimately retained control of the battlefield, they suffered so many casualties as to be effectively eliminated as a fighting force. Painting by Frederick Coffay Yohn, c. 1901.
