General Horatio Gates (1727-1806), an officer of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He is known for his victory at the Battles of Saratoga (19 September, 7 October 1777), his failed attempt to replace George Washington as commander-in-chief of the American forces in the Conway Cabal, and his defeat at the Battle of Camden (16 August 1780). Oil on canvas by Gilbert Stuart, c. 1793.
