A photograph showing the trials on the Kent coast using the bouncing bomb in the spring of 1943. The bomb was designed for use in Operation Chastise of the night of 16 May 1943. The operation, also known as the 'Dam Busters' Raid, was carried out by a squadron of British RAF Lancaster bombers using the bouncing bomb to breach the Ruhr dams in Germany and so flood the nearby heavy industry factories.
