A map illustrating the geopolitical situation in Europe and the Mediterranean in early November 1942 with World War II in Europe at a critical juncture. The Axis powers, led by Nazi Germany, had made significant advances across the continent in previous years, but by this time, their momentum was beginning to stall. The Allies had launched Operation Torch, landing in North Africa on November 8th, marking the beginning of a campaign to push Axis forces out of Africa and gain control of the Mediterranean. On the Eastern Front, the Soviet Union had launched a counteroffensive at Stalingrad, cutting off Germany's 6th Army and bringing the war to a turning point.
