A photograph taken in April 1945 following the Allied capture of the Nazi concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen in northern Germany. The 13,000 bodies Allied soldiers found were to be buried in mass graves. 60,000 emaciated prisoners were released. (Imperial War Museums)
