Ellen Craft (l. 1826-1891) in her disguise as a Southern gentleman during the 1848 flight to freedom of Ellen and her husband William Craft (l. 1824-1900). The original image appeared as the frontspiece to their Running a Thousand Miles For Freedom (1860). The present image is an illustration from page 162 of The Underground Railroad from Slavery to Freedom by Wilbur Henry Siebert, Albert Bushnell Hart, Edition: 2, published by Macmillan, 1898.
