This head belongs to a well-known statue, identified as Meleager, the ancient Greek hero who took part in the hunt for the Caledonian boar. Full length versions which survive show the hero standing with his hunting dog, spear, and the boar's head. These features may be have been Roman additions. The lost original statue has been associated with the mid-4th century BCE sculptor Skopoa, but there is no literary evidence to support such an attribution. Parian marble, Roman version or a Greek bronze original of about 340-330 BCE. Circa 120-130 CE. (The British Museum, London)
