The bowl with its dropped horizontal rim and niello decoration is the earliest vessel in the Mildenhall treasure made in Gaul in the 3rd century CE. It was not designed to have a lid. The deep-domed cover with a border of Bacchic ornament in relief was made in the 4th century CE, either for another bowl or perhaps specifically to fit the flanged bowl. The small statuette of Triton, which forms a knob, may nor have been part of the original design. 3rd to 4th centuries CE. (The British Museum, London)
