This detail depicts the deportation of the inhabitants of the city of Astartu (in modern-day Jordan Kingdom). The deported people are holding their personal belongings and are led by an Assyrian solider. The city was captured by the Assyrian army led by the king Tiglath-pilerser III (reigned 744-727 BCE), as the cuneiform inscription states. The relief once decorated the Central Palace at Niumrud and then was later re-used. Assyrian, about 730-727 BCE. From the South-West Palace at Nimrud (ancient Kalhu), Mesopotamia, Iraq. (The British Museum, London).
