This is the back panel of the Franks/Auzon Casket. This panel depicts the capture of the city of Jerusalem in 70 CE by the Roman general (later Emperor) Titus. The inscription on this panel appears as a mixture of Old English, Latin, runes, and insular scripts. The labels on the two lower corners read "dom" (which means judgment) and "gisl" (meaning hostage). The Casket was donated by Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks. Early 700s. From Auzon, Haute-Loire, Auvergne, modern-day France. (The British Museum, London).
