Mummy portrait of a man, painted in encaustic on limewood, from Hawara, Fayum, Egypt, 80-100 CE.

The British Museum, London.

The portrait was excavated by Sir William Petrie and formerly housed in the National Gallery. There is a fissure, which runs perpendicularly through the right ear. The eyes were unevenly placed. The upper margin was covered with linen wrappings of the mummy. A thin layer of paraffin was applied on the panel because the original wax was melted after excavation.
