Equivalent to four drachmae, this coin is perhaps the most beautiful issued by the Gela mint, made by an unidentified engraver named as the "Master of Sosipolis" (440 BCE).
The characteristic of this tetradrachm is the presence of a female figure who crowns the anthropomorphic bull (which represents the namesake river god of the city).
The name "Sosipolis" is an epithet of a male deity or as a person's name. "Sosipolis" in Greek meant "saviour of the city". (Pencil drawing by Gina Pardo)
