The Niger River is the most important river in West Africa, and is the third longest river in Africa after the Nile River and Congo River. Known for its distinctive "boomerang" shape, the Niger River flows from the Guinea Highlands to the Sahara before making a sharp turn back to the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. Given the river's historical importance to trade and agriculture in the region, the Niger has been at the heart of the most renowned civilizations in West Africa such as the Mali Empire.
