This c. 275-250 BCE terracotta amphora was found in the Hadra cemetery in Alexandria, Egypt. It was originally produced in Crete and was exported to Alexandria. The aptly named Hadra Hydriai are a collection of primarily Cretan vases which are well known for their use in Alexandrian funerary rites. In particular, these vases were used in the cremation of Greek dignitaries who happened to die in Alexandria. They were also used by Alexandrians who practiced cremation rather than mummification or inhumation (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
