The ksar (or fortified village) of Aït Benhaddou in Ouarzazate Province, Morocco, is an example of pre-Saharan earthen construction techniques. While these techniques are ancient, the oldest currently standing structures date to the 17th century CE. The structures inside are continually maintained using traditional techniques.

The Ksar of Aït Benhaddou remains a popular tourist destination, and was used for filming in Gladiator (2000 CE) and Alexander (2004 CE), among others. It also appears in the Game of Thrones television series, where it stood in for the fictional city of Yunkai (2013 CE).
