A detail of Viking Age decorative artwork found on the Oseberg ship interred in a ship burial in Norway c. 834 CE. It displays the first animal ornamentation style of the Viking Age, known as Style E (and sometimes referred to as the Oseberg- or Broa style), which flourished between the late 8th- and late 9th centuries CE. You can see the curving, interweaving animals with small heads and large eyes with feet that grip themselves, each other, or the framework which characterise this style.
