The basilica was the administration and court building of Augusta Raurica. The basilica was richly furnished and decorated – a veritable palace for Roman authorities. The basilica was renovated at least once. The retaining wall of the earlier basilica and the wastewater channel of the forum can still be seen by visitors today. The earlier building, which had been destroyed by fire towards the end of the 1st century CE, was rebuilt on a larger scale.
