Painting by Frank Dicksee (1853-1928 CE) titled "The Funeral of a Viking", showing a Viking being cremated on a ship pushed out to sea. The painting resides at the Manchester Art Gallery in the UK.
Historically, although burial became commonplace during the Viking Age, cremation on a pyre (not so much ship) was also practiced. Burying people in ships (such as the famous Oseberg Ship grave mound in Norway) seems to have been a luxury reserved for the wealthy since ships were so expensive.
