The Milanese regularly reinforced the Castlegrande castle throughout the 15th century CE. They also rebuilt the Murata - the walls located on the west side of Castelgrande - in addition to reinforcing the city’s walls. Although the Swiss attempted to take Bellinzona and Ticino in 1449 CE (Battle of Castione), 1478 CE (Battle of Giornico), and 1487 CE (Battle of Crevola), they were unable to do so as a result of the superior engineering and military prowess of the Milanese engineering. Castelgrande's present design and silhouette reflect the indelible Milanese imprint on Bellinzona.
