Genoelselderen ivory, Rhéno-Mosane region, island influence, end of the 8th century CE. Ivory and blue glass. Saint-Martin church in Genoelselderen (near Tongeren, Belgium). Musée d’Art et d’Histoire (Musée du Cinquantenaire, Brussels, Belgium).

On the left plate, the triumphant Christ crushes Evil, symbolized by demonic animals (e.g. asp, a lion and a dragon). The other plaque represents the Annunciation (the announcement of the birth of Christ) and the Visitation (Mary’s visit to Elisabeth). Many small fixing holes suggest that the two plates were originally fixed on a wooden core, perhaps a box or a binding plate.
