Mask from a complete cartonnage consisting of mask and three breast pieces. Excavated by the Egypt Exploration Society at Abydos. Ancient Egyptian, dating to the Ptolemaic period, 323-30 BCE. The gold colouring reflects the ancient Egyptian belief that the god's skin was made from that material. Other symbols of rebirth after death include the winged scarab beetle, shown on the top of the head.
