The book is laid out with a 2-page spread that details a city, people, or topic in ancient Mesopotamian history including the first cities, writings, artifacts, etc. It provides a short description of the topic with pictures or artifacts, ruins, art, and people of the times. In the descriptions, some words are bolded which are included in an extremely useful glossary in the back of the book.

The book is colorful, brief, and exciting to read and look at! It is designed to keep the interest of a young child and teach them interesting facts in a short space. It covers a wide breadth of topics and so appeals to many different interests. The information spans the various ages of Mesopotamian history as well, linking it to the other cultures in the area such as Greece and Rome. It catches many of the most interesting aspects of Mesopotamian culture and history and provides a great introduction to the peoples. It discusses how we know about the ancient cultures and portrays it as something that is still important and interesting today. This book is well-done and would be a great resource for elementary school-aged children.
