Biography
I am currently Associate Professor of History and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of California-Davis. I came to Davis after taking two degrees (BA 2005, PhD 2011) at the University of Michigan and a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard's Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies.
My research focuses on the relationship between non-Russian peoples and territories and the imperial core during the long 19th century. A first book, _Knowledge and the Ends of Empire_, was a finalist for the Central Eurasian Studies Society's book prize in history and the humanities. I am currently at work on a second monograph studying borderlands violence and military masculinity in the Russian Empire.
When not engaged in teaching and research, I am a passionate cook and long-distance runner.
