The Dutch Revolt (the Eighty Years' War) was the Dutch war of independence against Spain. For 80 years the Dutch waged war against the Spanish crown. How did the Dutch Revolt start? The Reformation early 1500s caused many people in the Low Countries to turn to Protestantism. In the Low Countries Calvinism got popular among the people. Spanish ruler Charles V and his son Phillips II started to prosecute these so-called heretics. Many of them burned at the stake. Dutch nobles handed in the Supplication of the Nobles (Smeekschrift der Edelen). After this the prosecutions were halted. The Protestants started with Hedge-Preaches (Hagenpreken) what followed by the Iconoclastic Fury (Beeldenstorm). Phillips II sent Duke Alva (known as Iron Alva) to restore order. Many people fled the Low Countries. One of them was William of Orange (Willem van Oranje) who went to the German states. He returned with an army in 1568 and the Dutch Revolt (De Opstand) started. William of Orange was assisted by the Sea Beggars (Watergeuzen) to fight off the Spanish. Spain fought back but went bankrupt several times. Spanish troops mutinied and sacked Antwerp. This was known as the Spanish Fury (Spaanse Furie). With the Pacification of Ghent (Pacificatie van Gent) were the Dutch provinces (Catholic or Protestant) united themselves against Spanish aggression. What followed was the Act of Abjuration (Plakkaat van Verlatinghe). In 1588 the Dutch Republic (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden) was established. This Dutch confederacy continued the war against Spain. From 1609 to 1621 the Twelve Years’ Truce took place. Important people in Dutch history were William of Orange (Willem van Oranje) and his son Maurits van Oranje and Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. In this video you will have the Dutch Revolt explained. This vast time span of 80 years of war will be summarized.
